Show Notes

Welcome to the Millfield Way Podcast, which celebrates the school and its traditionally different ethos. In the inaugural podcast, listen to Matthew Cook, Millfield’s Director of Music, in conversation with two Upper Sixth Music pupils about the vital importance of young people’s access to music provision and tuition.

“We’ve almost doubled the amount of pupils involved in Millfield Music over the past three years. What that will deliver and will become is a programme that actually reaches all, that is accessible to all. The goal is to put on a programme that enriches that lives of all those around it.”

In the podcast, Matthew talks about how access to music allows pupils to not only discover a hidden talent, but also adopt skills that are transferable to everyday life, including working towards a goal, building character and self-esteem and being able to hear the result of hard work.

Millfield Music offers an inclusive and individualised education, incorporating collaboration and teamwork, which allows pupils to make the best progression possible. Matthew, Florence and Rowan discuss what they love about the department, but also realise the importance of increasing access to the local community and state schools that would otherwise have limited access to the creative arts.
